If your workshop stores injection molds on the floor, you already know the problems: wasted floor space, mold damage from stacking, and a crane or forklift tied up for every single retrieval. Drawer type mould racks solve all three by storing molds in organized sliding drawers - but only if you choose the right configuration. This guide explains the two main designs, how to size the load capacity, and the safety details that separate a professional mold rack from a steel shelf with drawers bolted on.
Content
Semi-open drawer racks extend the drawer partially (typically 60-80% of its depth). They cost less and work well for small to medium molds that can be lifted at a slight angle with a crane hook.
Full-open drawer racks extend a full 100%, so an overhead crane or gantry can lift the mold straight up and out without any angle. For molds above roughly 1,000 kg, full-open is almost always the right choice - it is the only configuration where mold handling is safe and fast at the same time. Huijian's full-open heavy-duty model carries 1,200 kg per drawer and can be supplied with an integrated hoist device, so loading and retrieval do not depend on an overhead crane or large forklift at all.

Drawer ratings are not one-size-fits-all. Professional manufacturers rate each drawer individually, typically from 200 kg up to 3,000 kg per drawer. The correct method:
1. List every mold with its weight, dimensions (L x W x H) and footprint.
2. Group by access frequency - high-runner molds belong in the most convenient drawer positions.
3. Add a 20-25% capacity margin above the heaviest mold in each group. Mold racks concentrate enormous loads on a small footprint; underspecifying here is the most expensive mistake in mold storage.
4. Check your floor. A full mold rack can concentrate several tons on four small base plates. Your supplier should provide exact point loads and anchor requirements with every layout - verify your slab can take it before installation, not after.
Three mechanisms separate industrial-grade drawer-type mould racks from light-duty imitations:
- Drawer interlock. Only one drawer should be able to open at a time. If two heavy drawers can roll out together, the rack's center of gravity shifts forward - this is the most common cause of mold rack tipping. A structural interlock (not just a warning label) should prevent it by design.
- Positioning safety lock and anti-dropout screws, so a drawer cannot drift open accidentally or jump its slides under load.
- Precision slide mounts, rated for the drawer's full load over tens of thousands of cycles - not generic ball-bearing slides from a hardware catalog.
Molds rust in damp, floor-level storage. A proper mold rack keeps tooling off the floor in a dry, ventilated position, and the rack itself should carry a rust-resistant, moisture- and dust-inhibiting coating. For humid workshops or long-term storage, ask about additional drawer surface treatments and plan your own rust-prevention routine (VCI packaging, protective oiling).
Pricing depends on drawer load rating, overall dimensions, number of drawers, and the semi-open/full-open choice. As with all steel storage equipment, buying directly from the manufacturer typically saves 20-40% compared to buying through a trading company - and you deal directly with the engineers who will size each drawer to your mold list.
Anhui Huijian Intelligent Equipment manufactures drawer-type mould racks in its own 58,000 square meter factory with 6 production lines and an annual output of 180,000 sets, under ISO9001 quality control from raw material inspection to final load testing. Every rack is customized in size, load rating and configuration. View the full drawer-type mold / tooling rack specification for details.
