If you are setting up or upgrading a warehouse, you will quickly run into the same question: should you buy pallet racking or boltless shelving? They look similar from a distance, but they are built for very different jobs. Choosing the wrong one wastes money and floor space. This guide explains the real differences so you can decide in five minutes.

Pallet racking is a heavy-duty storage system designed to hold goods on wooden or steel pallets. Forklifts load and unload the pallets, so racks can be built very tall — commonly 6 to 12 meters — to use the full height of your warehouse.
A standard heavy duty pallet racking system uses upright frames, horizontal beams, and safety accessories such as frame guards and row spacers. Load capacity typically ranges from 1,000 kg to 4,000 kg per level, depending on beam size and frame specification.
Typical applications:

Boltless shelving (also called rivet shelving) is a lighter system that assembles without nuts and bolts — parts snap or rivet together, and one person with a rubber mallet can build a unit in minutes. It stores goods directly on steel decks or panels, usually hand-loaded.
Load capacity is lower, typically 150 kg to 800 kg per shelf, which makes it ideal for small to medium items.
Typical applications:
| Factor | Pallet Racking | Boltless Shelving |
|---|---|---|
| Load per level | 1,000–4,000 kg | 150–800 kg |
| Loading method | Forklift | By hand |
| Height | 6–12 m possible | Usually under 3 m |
| Assembly | Bolted, needs tools | Tool-free, minutes |
| Cost per position | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Pallets, bulk inventory | Small items, hand picking |

1. How heavy are your goods?
If a typical load exceeds 500 kg per position, pallet racking is the safer choice. Boltless shelving is perfect for anything one person can carry.
2. Who loads the shelves — people or forklifts?
Forklifts mean pallet racking. Hand-picking means boltless shelving will be faster and cheaper to run.
3. How high is your warehouse?
If you have clear height above 6 meters, going tall with pallet racking can double your storage density. Low rooms favor boltless shelving.

In practice, the most efficient warehouses combine both: pallet racking along the walls and in bulk zones, boltless shelving in picking and assembly areas. The two systems complement each other, and because both are modular, you can expand either one later.
As a rough factory-direct reference, boltless shelving costs considerably less per unit, while pallet racking is priced by the bay and depends on height, beam load and quantity.
