Injection molds are among the most expensive assets in a molding shop - a single medium-sized mold can cost more than a car. Yet many workshops still store them on the floor, where they take up production space, get damaged by stacking, and slow down every mold change. There are five practical ways to store injection molds; each fits a different mold weight, budget and retrieval frequency. Here is an honest comparison.
Content
| System | Mold weight | Retrieval speed | Space efficiency | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Floor stacking | Any | Slow (crane every time) | Very poor | None (but hidden damage costs) |
| Static steel shelving | Light molds up to 300 kg | Medium | Medium | Low |
| Drawer-type mold racks | 200-3,000 kg per drawer | Fast - direct drawer access | High | Medium |
| Roll-out mold shelving | 500-2,000 kg per level | Fast - shelf rolls out 100% | High | Medium-high |
| Vertical carousel / AS/RS | Light-medium | Fast, automated | Very high | High |
Floor stacking requires zero investment, which is why most shops start there. But every mold change needs a crane or forklift, aisles must stay clear for the crane's travel path, and molds stored on top of each other get scratched, corroded and occasionally dropped. In practice, floor stacking consumes 2-3 times the floor space of an organized system and quietly damages tooling worth far more than any rack.
Verdict: acceptable only for a handful of very large, rarely used molds with dedicated crane access.
Adjustable steel shelving (200-300 kg per level) is cheap and familiar. It works for small molds, inserts and spare components. Its limits appear quickly: shelves only hold light loads, retrieval from deep positions requires emptying the shelf in front, and there is no protection against a shelf being overloaded by an enthusiastic forklift driver.
Verdict: a budget option for light molds under 300 kg, not a shop-scale solution.

Drawer-type mold racks store each mold in its own sliding drawer, rated individually from 200 kg up to 3,000 kg. Drawers extend fully so a crane can lift molds straight out, an interlock prevents more than one drawer opening at a time, and every drawer has a positioning safety lock. The full-open heavy-duty models (1,200 kg per drawer and above) can include an integrated hoist device, so retrieval does not depend on an overhead crane at all.
Compared with shelving, drawers give direct access to every mold with no double-handling; compared with floor stacking, a typical installation recovers 50-70% of the floor area.
Verdict: the best fit for most injection molding shops running 20-500 molds. See our detailed drawer type mould racks selection guide for configuration and sizing.
Roll-out shelving (roll-out rack) uses heavy-duty sliding shelves instead of drawers, typically 500-2,000 kg per level, extending 100% for direct crane access. It suits long or irregularly shaped molds that do not fit drawer footprints, and very heavy molds where drawer depth would be limiting.
Verdict: excellent for heavy and bulky molds; costs more than drawer racks and offers slightly less dense storage.
Vertical carousels and automated storage systems deliver molds to an ergonomic pickup station at the push of a button, with inventory software tracking every position. They save enormous space and retrieval time - at a price that only makes sense for large mold inventories (typically 300+ molds) or cleanroom environments.
Verdict: the right long-term answer for big, high-mix operations; overkill for most independent molding shops.
1. Weigh your molds. Anything above 300 kg rules out static shelving.
2. Count your mold changes per day. More than a few changes makes drawer or roll-out systems pay for themselves within months in crane time alone.
3. Measure your space. Floor stacking typically consumes 2-3x the area of drawer systems for the same mold count.
4. Check your crane situation. No overhead crane? Choose full-open drawer racks with an integrated hoist.
Anhui Huijian Intelligent Equipment designs and manufactures drawer-type and roll-out mold storage systems in its own 58,000 square meter factory under ISO9001 quality control, customized to your mold list, floor loading and handling equipment.
Send us your mold inventory (weights and dimensions) on WhatsApp (+86 133 0679 3165) and we will prepare a side-by-side layout of the systems that fit - with floor space, point loads and a detailed quotation, usually within 24 hours.
